Every year, Muslims celebrate a whole month of fasting called Ramadhan. In this holy month, Muslims refrain from food, drink, sex and tobacco from dawn (subuh) until dusk (maghrib). Every adult Muslim must undertake this ritual as a religious obligation, except for the sick; women who are menstruating, pregnant or breast-feeding; and the elderly.

The London 2012 Olympic Games, which run from 27 July to 12 August, coincide with the Muslim month of Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. One of the five pillars of Islam is to fast during this holy month. All able-bodied Muslims are expected to fast, unless they have a valid reason not to, for example those who are travelling, sick or facing health risks.

Ramadan begins tonight, and the month-long Islamic religious observance doesn’t end until the evening of Saturday, Aug. 18.
The holy period of fasting, prayer, meditation and other acts of faith is a momentous one for the world’s Muslims — and it also might have economic effects on companies and consumers in your area. And as you can see by this Valparaiso University map, Muslims as a Percentage of All Residents 2000, many communities nationwide are home to a noteable number of Islamic adherants.

Asthma UK have produced the following information to help people fasting.
Fasting is willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. An absolute fast is a complete abstinence from all food and liquid for an amount of time. Other fasts may only limit particular foods or substances. Fasts may also be partial in nature, for example for a set period each day for a set length of time, such as Ramadan. Fasting may preclude sexual intercourse and other activities like smoking and drinking alcohol.

MORE than 40 per cent of all food prepared daily during Ramadan will be thrown away, says a top environmentalist.
A typical Bahraini household cooks around six to seven dishes for Iftar, nearly half of which will be wasted and release harmful emissions when they break down, warned Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife waste disposal unit senior environment specialist Mohammed Aman.
