Focus shifts to the competency of Halal certification organisations following pork and horse DNA found in burgers in EU

Amid fears that Halal products may also be affected by the recent findings by the Food Standards Agency of Ireland, the attention of Muslims have moved to the standards and operations of Halal certification organisations worldwide that confirm that the end product indeed is halal.

The Food Standards Agency of Ireland (FSAI) issued a press release on Tuesday 15th January 2013 after publishing findings of a study examining the authenticity of a number of beef burger, beef meal and salami products available from retail outlets in Ireland. It tested for the presence of horse and pig DNA and showed the presence of horse DNA in some beef burger products. This was followed by Food Standards Agency on Wednesday alerting consumers in England.

By semi-vegetarian, I mean that I only eat meat on certain occasions, under specific circumstances, and following very strict guidelines. I would say in a given month, I eat meat twice, maybe three times (if that). “But whyyy?” you might ask? Simple. I’m following the commands of Allah
