ANSA partcipated in the first ever historic International Conference on Halal Food in Riyadh which concluded on Tuesday with the Saudi government promising the delegates to tighten supervision and standards,  and calling on non-Muslim countries exporting food to Islamic countries to strictly adhere to Islamic regulations with regard to ensuring products are Halal.

Riyadh Gov. Prince Sattam inaugurated the conference and a related exhibition in the Saudi capital on Sunday. The first ever such programme held under the aegis of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah was organized by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority(SFDA).  With stunning strongly opposed by speakers ANSA believes they can win the confidence of the Middle East market as a producer of genuine Halal Meat and Poultry in following the traditions of The Prophetic method of slaughter.

Professor Maha M. Hadi, chairwoman of the nutrition department in Cairo University, warned that bovine growth hormones mixed with some feed may cause breast and colon cancers.

“If you eat meat, you must be concerned about what the animal or poultry were fed,” she said, adding that generally animal feed will include ingredients from different origins.

“Regarding halal and haram in animal feed, we should be concerned with the origin of each ingredient and additive used in animal feed,” she noted.

Mufti Muhammad Usman of Darul Baseerah (Bradford) representing ANSA (Association of Non Stun Abattoirs) said: We welcome this as a positive signal for the UK producers of animal feed and  genuine  Halal meat as they can meet the criteria on both of these issues.

Presently, South East Asia and the Middle East are the two strong markets for Halal products (Riaz, 1998). All major U.S. poultry processors export to these markets, whereas secondary suppliers provide beef. The primary sources of beef in those markets are imports from Australia and New Zealand, whose governments are very supportive of Halal programmes (Chaudry, 1997). Marketing efforts to supply certified Halal products throughout the world are gaining momentum.

Mohammed Saleem ANSA policy director and spokesperson stated: “The conference proves one fundamental point, given the choice Muslims throughout the world prefer “The Prophetic Method of Slaughter”, this is a fantastic opportunity for ANSA members to supply quality English Halal meat and poultry to the Middle East market”. Muslims of the world will not accept meat and poultry unless it is non-stunned and slaughtered in accordance to the teachings of the Holy Prophet sallaahu’alaihi wa sallam.
