UK: Project work to have healthier Halal food Category: Behalal.org work

February 2012

We are kick starting our project work for 2012, to get businesses serving halal food to give us healthier food; halal/tayyab food that is good for you when eaten in moderation. Lots of research to show that often some dishes can be loaded with high calories and too much salt, saturated fats and trans fats.

This poster is in response to amendment #205 that has been added to a Regulation on the provision of food information to consumers. Although the majority of the Bill is concerned with labelling food products with nutritional information, amendment #205, tabled by German MEP Renate Sommer, requires all meat products derived from animals that have been slaughtered by dhabh without the use of pre-stunning to be labelled as ‘meat from slaughter without stunning‘.

Help us get the message out. Join our campaign. Simply click on the poster link BELOW and download it to your computer. It is artwork ready, so you can have it printed out for your mosque or shop. Ideal size is A2 – ask your printer.

As-salaamu-alaikum,

Behalal.org exists to arm Muslim consumers with information so as to ascertain the Halal status of the products that they purchase. The size of the Halal market means there is considerable power in the ‘Muslim pound’. If co-ordinated this can be use to drive manufacturer behaviour towards those production methods which best meet Muslim needs thereby increasing the pleasure of Allah swt.

Halal food is everywhere. According to recent news reports, it might have been “secretly” snuck into your sandwich at a football match or fed to your “unwitting” child in their school dinner. It’s also found in hospital canteens, pubs and sporting venues. But what is this frightening food that the Mail on Sunday proclaims is being “prepared in accordance with Sharia law”?

EU labelling proposals for meat and meat products to ONLY carry the label “Meat from animals slaughtered without stunning”.

Yes, things are brewing as you read this article. Fact: Animals slaughtered without stunning are banned in Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland and recently in New Zealand. It’s happening right on our doorstep in Europe. Our concern is that it may be eventually bought in through the back door and imposed on us all in the UK too.
